Ever wonder why Youtube is more famous than MTV? Have you ever wondered why some artists go to great length just to promote their music online?

There is a lot of reasons why YouTube has become more famous and successful than MTV. First of all YouTube has a really fast service, the music never gets cut. You have some commercials but most of the times you can skip them and it is only in the beginning of the song. Jeff Price has wrote an article about his point of view why YouTube is taking over.  Labels are the biggest money-making machine in the music industry nowadays. According to Jeff Price the Labels don't make any money by playing their artist's video on MTV, that is a big loss for them. If they publish a song ilegally, they have the right to bring the video on YouTube down, this is an advantage for Record labels and also for the artists. So basically YouTube is better, because the labels gets money and the customers get free music videos and they can upload their own version of the song. That is another type of promotion and sponsors can be decided by the artists/bands themselves.

MTV vs. YouTube

MTV shows less music videos than in the past but different kinds of shows. At the same time YouTube creates special areas on the page that focus on music like http://www.youtube.com/music, which shows the top 100 music videos on YouTube. Furthermore is it much easier for musicians to present their work and advertise on YouTube. It is for free and easy to use. For the customer is it easier to use YouTube instead of MTV, too. On YouTube the people can chose which videos they watch and additionally they get the most actual music presented in charts. Another important point is that not only the regular chart music can be found on YouTube but also every other kind of music. People can find the music they like, put it in playlists and organise it that way. The only problems about music videos on YouTube are right issues in some cases. In some countries people cannot view some of the music videos because YouTube does not earn the rights on the music and the video because they are not willing to pay for it. In these cases the videos get blocked. (http://www.20min.ch/digital/dossier/google/story/21528429)

Additionally, YouTube does not only provide music videos, but also almost every other kind of videos. It contains mostly of content created by the users. Even MTV has a YouTube account and uploads video clips there. Most of these clips are very short and used to promote shows on MTV. Music videos are not uploaded by MTV on YouTube.
YouTube reaches much more people than MTV. It is available in 60 languages and is localised in 43 countries. Since more and more people have access to broadband internet, YouTube is available to almost everybody.
“What you used to do ... is watch six hours of MTV to catch the video of the band you liked,” he said. “Now that everyone has some version of a smart phone or tablet [computer], it’s become really easy to say, ‘Oh, listen to this band,’ and pull it up 10 seconds later on YouTube. It’s right here at your fingertips.” - Zach Bridges
